PLACES TO VISIT |
THE FUJI WORLD WIDE WEB |
![]()
| Since starting flying I have realised that one of the pleasures it gives is the freedom to go to places you would not normally visit in a day or week end. The trouble is Polleys gives the airport details but what next? Here are just a few places to go where there is something better to do than just turn around and go home. Please can you let me know your favourites so we can all go and enjoy them, but chose critically, something special needs to be on offer! Suggested criteria are that the attraction is close to the airport and relatively easy to get to, if it is a restaurant, well above average, and if it is an attraction, worthy of a visit. | ![]() |

BEMBRIDGE (ISLE OF WHITE)
One hard runway. £10 landing fee. Go to the “Crab & Lobster”, 5 minutes by taxi and also a fiver. In keeping with its name I reckon the seafood is very good. There is also a lovely sandy beach 5 minutes walk away (due East through the caravan park). Both are open all year but check on gliding activity. Bembridge was closed in 2000, but is expected to reopen shortly. The "Crab & Lobster" is still recommended if a little further from Sanddown.
EAST MIDLANDS
You can easily hire a car and Alton Towers is about 30 minutes away.
LOGNES
The best airport I have found for Paris, the centre of which is about 30 minutes by metro but a short taxi ride to the station is needed. Euro Disney is the same distance away in the opposite direction. A reasonable and very cheap hotel on the airfield. The controllers speak English but watch the Charles de Gaule airspace. Remember to take cash for fuel, credit cards are NOT accepted.
ALDERNEY
I reckon the best of the Channel Islands. Of course it depends what you want, but Alderney offers tranquillity. Car rental and fuel is inexpensive. This is one for a summer CAVOK day, take the kids and a bucket and spade!
LE TOUQUET
I know we have all been here but included for golfers. Aside from the other attractions the two courses (links and woodland) are 5 minutes away, welcoming and of a high standard. In the summer the opportunity of a round, lunch and home within the day from most of the UK. Credit cards for fuel ARE accepted.
CRANFIELD
Well known for the PFA rally of course, but new is the snow dome about 10 minutes by taxi, and a tenner. Great for ski enthusiasts with real snow! Remember to book, particularly at week ends. Plenty to do in the dome as well. Shame about the landing fee at Cranfield at around £28 with a bit of parking - seems expensive.
Chateau La Chassagne
The French chateau with its own private strip, a Roller to collect you and the cases, and a bottle of Champagne to revive the spirits after the journey. Its about three hours from coasting out at Lydd, and 10 minutes from either of the airports at Dijon. The Chateau is very pleasant, and the surrounding area great for a visit. Kilo Tango was there in 2000!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE CAN WE HAVE A FEW MORE CONTRIBUTIONS!
